There was a holiday market happening a the craft store I frequented in Little Tokyo, Nellita’s Crafts. I entered the ugly sweater contest and won a prize! But, the real prize was the experience of Takumi Alley’s whimsy and delight. The organizer was a bit panicked, apologizing for being more of a artist than a events planner.
“Hey, I’m an events planner!”
And that’s how this started.
As part of Education Beyond Our Walls (EBOW), I wrote a messaging narrative game using the Hive Mechanic Program.
After having worked in Little Tokyo for a number of years, I was surprised to see that there wasn’t the same resources for historical education on this part of town. The goal was to have a passive way that visitors could learn more about the Japanese American roots in West Los Angeles. Together with the wonderful staff at Playful City Lab of American University and collaboration with the Los Angeles Public Library, I created the overarching frame for this game.
